It has been an honour and a privilege to have known Gareth these past few years whilst caring for Rita. A knowledgeable man with a great sense of humour. Rest easy now Gareth. Condolences to Rita and all her family.

I remember when I visited Dr Devonald at the surgery in Pahiatua. I was feeling a bit crook (a kiwi version of not well). He looked at me and said I suppose you expect me to perform a miracle. I replied well I hope so or we might as well go to the pub. He roared with laughter. That, and his Welsh accent made him memorable. It would be nice to find a doctor like him..but those days have gone when your doctor actually knew you.

Rita, Rebecca and Matthew , I am sorry to learn of your loss of a loved husband and Dad. Many warm memories of life in Pahiatua with Gareth. His sense of humour and good advice got me through an unexpected twin experience. He also gave me many hints directed at bringing up Children, mostly light hearted with his own experience in mind.. This was always imparted at parent interview time, Matthew. Thank you for sharing him with us for those years. My sympathy to you all.

Gareth was the most wonderful teacher and an inspirational and wise doctor. I have so many fond memories both as his Registrar in Pahiatua and then when he moved to Christchurch.
Always generous with his time and wise counsel.
My condolences to Rita, Rebecca and Matthew.
