Donald WRIGHT Obituary

On March 16, 2026, at Burwood Hospital, aged 87 years. Loved father and father-in-law of Jacqui and Grant, Poppa of Natalie, loved brother, uncle, friend, and member of the Akaroa community. A special thanks to the staff of C1 Ward at Burwood Hospital for their care and compassion of Sawdust in his final days. A service to celebrate Sawdust's life will be held at The Gaiety Theatre, 105 Rue Jolie, Akaroa, on March 28, at 2.00pm.

The name "Sawdust" says it all! That was how he always introduced himself. My earliest memories are of a tall teenager in the late 1950s employed by my Dad to help build our boatshed in Duvauchelle. And a confident young MC at the News Years eve dance in the Akaroa Boatclub. Fast forward to the 1990's when Charlie and I moved to Duvauchelle and he milled macrocarpa off our farm block for our new home, Veterinary clinic, and to help rebuild the wharf washed away in the 1992 storm. A friendship flourished between us so he could usually be found on our deck at lunchtime or included on our many trips to the coast either searching out historic old bits and pieces for his beloved sawmill in Barrys Bay or whitebaiting. In the mid 1990s he also accompanied us on several overseas trips which were always made more hilarious by his knack of attracting the unexpected or downright scary - like taking us to buy a paddle boat on the Murray River or down a coal mine in Reefton! I wish I could add all the wonderful pictures that are still in my head of the happy times I shared with Sawdust and my beloved Charlie.(AKA Chas.) but is is lovely to know that Jacqui and Nat are passing on his unique gene pool !!!! My love to all his family.

To the Wright Family, our deepest sympathy for the passing of Donald, he certainly turned many logs to sawdust, that I carted to the mill,in the 1960s.
