Very sad to hear about David's passing. I worked with David at the Maximart Department store in 'Shirley' many years ago, around 1982. We were around the same age and he worked in the 'sports department'. A lot of fun and happy memories.
David was a very polite and knowledgeable person especially about music, we were both massive Pink Floyd fans and it was always great to talk about the rock bands of the day.
My deepest condolences to the family, 'Shine on you crazy diamond' -

Herbie you made 4.30am wake-ups worthwhile. We were Tourist Radio on Plains FM for a short time but good mates for much longer. You were funny enough to make me laugh before my first coffee. Cricket, music, we shared much in common & you were such a generous, caring, thoroughly good human who did so much for others. Although our lives had taken different paths over the last two decades I often thought of you when reliving happy memories & I have photos to treasure. My sincerest condolences to Jan & Ella & your many close friends. Such a loss to the community.

Condolences Jan and family. I´m really saddened to learn of Herbies passing. We knocked about together at Riccarton Cricket and in Invercargill when we lived down there in the mid 90s. A genuine top human being.

Dave - was honoured to share a beer with you before you gained your Angel Wings and headed to the Greatest Cricket Ground. You are a legend not only to cricket clubs but to everyone whom you came in contact with. Your warmth, enthusiasm, friendliness, irresistible charm etc will be missed. You always welcomed everyone who walked into your vision regardless of whose place it was. You will be remembered by us and everyone.
Addios Dear Friend

It has been a shock to hear of Herbie's passing.
As part of the same group that knocked about together in our late teens, twenties and thirties Herbie was known as a quite a character and got on with everyone famously.
His passion for sport (especially cricket) is well known but we also shared a love of music which formed many memories which I will treasure.
Condolences to Jan and family at this very sad time.
Vale Herbie, sadly gone but will never be forgotten.

Dear David,
What a shock to hear you have left us all.
My reasons for writing message are that I worked with you at a small Access radio station a long time ago. David as programme Director at Radio Southland 96.4FM in Invercargill, you guided many people into the skills of broadcasting. You were kind, funny, and you had such integrity and also a gift of artistic flair, you remember Country Wednesday? The country music fans loved this!
Dear David, I shall miss you.
Please accept my sincerest condolences to your loved ones.
Respectfully
Deborah L Smith.

Herbie you will be sorely missed especially in cricket circles.
Your witt and love of the game was always evident in every game you umpired. The players always respected you and you were great company after the game with your endless stories.
Rest well my friend.

A great servant to Canterbury Cricket Umpires and Scorers Assn over many years. Herbie was a likeable rogue who could be great fun over a few beers. Many in club cricket would have had something to do with Herbie over his many years of umpiring.Had a great knowledge of the game and its history. Will miss the banter of times past and your quirky communication. RIP dear friend
