David FERGUSSON Obituary
On October 3, 2018, after a long illness. Beloved husband of Prue Wignall, dearly loved father of Jon, Becky, Jeremy and Matthew, loved Grandpa Dave of all of his grandchildren, loved stepfather and grandfather of Laura, Ian, Oliver and Isabella Drew, Caroline, Trent, Tyler and Lexi Wright, and dearly loved by Annette. A funeral service for David will be held at 1.00pm on Wednesday, October 10, at Shone and Shirley's Chapel, 164 Tahunanui Drive, Nelson. In lieu of flowers, donations to Early Start, which was David's proudest achievement, would be appreciated. These may be made at the funeral, or, if preferred, sent to Early Start, PO Box 21013, Edgeware, Christchurch 8143. All communications c/o Shone and Shirley, 164 Tahunanui Drive, Nelson.

Dave was such a valuable mentor to me in my first years out of University in Wellington. We worked on a pioneering government longitudinal research study together in 1975/76- The Prediction of Juvenile Offending. It was a very large (25,000 plus sample size), complex undertaking and required strong leadership and incisive intellect. Dave deserves most of the credit for the substantive research reports that resulted. I guess he cut his his teeth on this study prior to being approached to lead the Christchurch Child Development Study!
A complex, irreverent and highly intelligent man who has left a valuable legacy in social research.

My thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues of David. I was a colleague who always enjoyed stimulating conversation and exchange of ideas with David. He was very helpful in setting up the Better Start National Science Challenge and has been a great academic mind within the University of Otago. Thankyou David for your many contributions!
