Mr Usher taught me French for a period during my time at Christ´s College and I appreciated his laid back style. While I was not a star pupil, I came out with sufficient ability to be able to read, speak and understand French whenever I visit France.
It was his leadership of the Venture Group that I particularly reflect on. My exposure to outdoor pursuits that he and Mr Studholme enabled has led in my later life to an ongoing pleasure in such things, specifically tramping. The Venture Group commitment would have been at the expense of his own personal and family free time.
And that reflects on his motivation in life, for him school teaching was not a job, it was a vocation dedicated to helping young men to live full and useful lives. He certainly helped me.

I first met Charles when he tried to teach me French in 1973 at Christ's College! Despite trying his best, unfortunately, he didn't succeed!
My dad, being a horse Veterinary Surgeon, had a bit to do with him through dressage.
I remember Charles coming up to me during the Christ's College 150th celebrations when I was looking at the display of past uniforms upstairs in the Assembly hall. He sidled up to me and said, "Do you remember who I am?" Of course, I remembered him. He was one of the good guys at College and was unforgettable!
I ran into Charles a few times at funerals, the last time at Richard Bromley's funeral.
R.I.P Charles, you will be much missed.
Talking to other Old Boys, the one thing that stood out was how much of a nice bloke Charles always was!
