Charles Mills Obituary

HILTONS, VA – CHARLES HERBERT MILLS, AGE 82

Charles Herbert Mills, 82, passed away August 15, 2025 at his home after a period of declining health. He was born December 23,1942 in Catlettsburg, KY to the late Samson and Gladys Sebastian Mills. He grew up in the Midway Community of Scott County, attended Midway Elementary School and was a 1961 graduate of Gate City High School. Charles attended Clinch Valley College where he was a member of the cross-country team. He served his country in the Army 62nd Signal Detachment in DeNang, Vietnam from 1965-1966. He was a member of Hiltons Missionary Baptist Church where he provided music for a number of years. He retired from Joy Manufacturing in Duffield, VA. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his son, Dale Frances Harmon Mills; his identical twin brother, Samson Hobert Mills.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lena McCracken Mills; son, John Charles Mills; sisters, Dicey Mills Ford and Elizabeth Mills; brother, Joe Mills (Gwen); nephews, Bill Oakes, Tim Oakes (Kimberly), Bryan Mills (Caroline; niece, Beth Grantham (Scott); one grand-niece, seven grand-nephews, one great grand-niece and two great grand-nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at Colonial Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 PM. Interment will follow at Holston View Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Posts #3, Kingsport, TN and #265, Gate City, VA and Virginia National Guard Honors Team.

Bill Oakes, Tim Oakes, Aaron Oakes, Tyler Oakes, Peyton Oakes and Austin Condry will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Mills and Teddy Darnell.
