I met Bryan about sixty years ago when he was appointed headmaster at Waltham School and he and Margaret came to live in the school house.
I was secretary of the school committee at the time (the only woman) and was delighted by the good relations Bryan established, not only with staff & school committee, but also with the children & their parents. His skill so impressed his employers he was promoted and left Waltham School after only 5 terms.
Bryan was generous. I particularly remember the time Margaret and I spent at Mt Cook. Bryan had been awarded a flight for himself and wife to the Hermitage for a weekend, but insisted I take his place while he looked after the family. Margaret and I thought we were in heaven as we flew over the mountains on a perfect day then luxuriated in the comfort of the Hermitage. I am still grateful to Bryan. I saw little of him in subsequent years but Margaret and I became close friends.
With deep sympathy for your loss,
Glen Metcalf

Bryan Gainsford taught me in 1959 when I was in Form 2 (Year 8) at Prebbleton School and he came that year to be headmaster. He was, at that time, a member of the Christchurch Harmonic Society Choir and a very accomplished singer. His influence gave me a life-long love of Choral music and years later as an adult I sang with him in both the Harmonic Society Choir and the Christchurch City Choir. He worked tirelessly for both of these organisations over the years and always gave a great support to choral music in Christchurch. I am sure there are many others who are grateful for the influence he had on their lives. A lovely man. A life well-lived. Sincere Sympathy to Bryan's family.

Bryan was one of life's true gentlemen, never had a bad word to say about anyone and was always encouraging. He was a dear friend for more than 60 years and I shall miss him very much. Many hours spent singing together or going to movies. Rest in peace my friend with your loved ones who preceded you.

Mr Gainsford was the Headmaster at a time when I attended Waltham Primary School and his late son Stephen was my classmate. Mr Gainsford was an exceptional headmaster, so kind and supportive of everyone. Deepest sympathies to his family who were so fortunate to have such a lovely Dad.
