I found out today that Betty passed away several weeks ago. My sympathy is sent to you all.
I knew Betty and your father Peter, in the days when they lived in Maruia at Springs Junction. Tim owned the tearooms where Betty worked. She lived in a hut that had been moved up from our Mill until she and Peter were married and a house was moved on to the property.
Peter worked for the Ministry of Works. My father Gordon Havill, had the garage next door and from the age of about ten I went with him every weekend to serve petrol and help Betty in the tearooms. In the late 50s we moved to our farm at Springs Junction, just across the road and over the creek from the tearooms. We saw a lot of your parents during that time.
When I think back to those days, Betty worked exceptionally hard, and didn't have all the conveniences people have today. She baked the best scones every morning in the coal range. The other think sold there by the dozen was Tim's pies. Betty was a good person and I know will be missed by you all.
