Betty F. Hallenstein, age 80, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025 after a long battle with dementia.
Born in Langley Field, VA, she was the daughter of Wanda and Robert Woodlief. Betty grew up in Springfield, MA and graduated from Commerce High School, class of 1963. After being set up on a blind date in 1966 with Alex Hallenstein, Betty married Alex in 1967 and they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on August 31st. They settled in Niskayuna, NY in 1976.
Betty worked as an administrative assistant before going to Schenectady County Community College earning a paralegal degree, graduating with highest honors. Eventually Betty retired from her position at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center after school site director.
Betty enjoyed winters in Florida with Alex and summers at Alpine Lake Campground in Corinth. She loved all her rescue dogs and was often seen walking in the neighborhood with them. Betty was a congregant at Congregation Agudat Achim and was a proud member of the second B'not Mitzvah class.
Betty leaves her husband Alex and daughter Aviva. She was predeceased by her daughter Miriam and her sister Joanne Mrazik.
The family would like to thank all of Betty's caregivers from Unlimited Care for the wonderful and dedicated care she received over the past two years.
The funeral was held graveside on Monday September 8th at Congregation Agudat Achim Cemetery in Rotterdam, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Miriam Hallenstein Tikkun Olam Endowment Fund at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center, Congregation Agudat Achim or a charity of your choice.
