Bernie .. our part-time neighbour (we were the part-time) ...

"There is a Maori proverb that is spoken when a much-loved and well-respected man passes.

"Kua hinga te totara o te wao nui a Tane"

"A great totara tree of the Forest of Tane has fallen."

This proverb refers to the impact one of the great trees in the forest has on the rest of life in the forest.

When a great totara falls, it is felt in every part of the forest.

In its wake it leaves an empty space that is noticed by everyone who passes.

And a void that is felt by all .. especially those who knew the tree, and where it once stood."

Different people make a first impression in different ways. Bernie was a gentle man with a genuine warmth inside and a smile in his eyes. Our thoughts with Kate, family and friends in NZ. Love Alan & Ann in London

Bernie, my cousin, from childhood I looked up to you, like almost everyone had to... for your stature yes, but above all for your personal qualities, or virtues, that are rare in a world of inflamed egos and frenzied communication. Your smiles revealed the warmth of your heart, you could stretch time. You were, in a modest way, a guide and truly were a great man.
Although we are all sad not to be able to spend more time with you, I am grateful for your past gifts and ongoing presence.
My condolences to the Caugheys, and to all who will miss you.
