Dear Jill and all Ben's family
Thank you Jill for asking Gae to phone me .I must say I got such a shock and tears began to flow .I tried phoning you but knew you would also be in a state of grief
I had planned to be with you all tomorrow at Ben's Requiem Mass but sadly the best made plans get shattered sometimes .
By Friday I had developed gastro enteritis which has lingered so daren't come near people .
I especially would love ot have been there to support Michael since Ben and I are his god parents .It was not that long ago that Ben and Michael came to our daughter's home for dinner at Mt Pleasant where Tom and I always stay when we come to Chch .We always did this each time I came to Chch .This would have been the last time I saw Ben and Michael .Ben has been theo most wonderful caring loving friend to Michael who is feeling his loss so much .I try to phone Michael most nights . have spoken to the staff who Michael says are going to take him to Ben's Requiem Mass ..We are feeling deeply for each of you at the loss fo your exceptional brother and friend . and hold each of you in our heart and our prayers .Tom and Judith McInerney

My condolences to the family. I have very fond memories of his classes and of sitting in his office for hours talking about Plato. He was a great teacher and a kind person. He will be missed.

We are both shocked and saddened to hear of BENS passing he was a true friend and shipmate we will miss his visits a beer and a yarn that we have enjoyed over the years will catch up on fiddlers green safe passage Rob and VAL Williams Nelson
