I enjoyed Bayne's company through the last third of his life as that was when I met him. I joined the Canterbury Recreational Cycling Club, of which he was an active member. Heard of the quintessential kiwi bloke that could turn his hand to almost any task and make stuff work? Bayne was that guy - for real. As an example, he built up his own electric bicycle, from a manual one. Bayne never sought the limelight for himself. But he was a key figure in supporting the dreams of others. In particular I am thinking of his role in management support for 1960s NZ motor racing legend Roly Levis. Bayne spoke warmly of his extended family, being particularly ebullient about the adventurous exploits of his nephew Ritchie. Bayne was polite in character, except when someone tried pulling his leg, at which point he was able to snap to sort out the situation very quickly! Bayne had a caring nature. I remember him telling me about a fellow club member who had life changing injuries as a result of an accident. Bayne nevertheless kept in touch with them, when the easy thing to do would have been to let them become a faceless casualty of the health system. I will cherish the memories of my own bike rides with Bayne over the years. Rest in peace my friend.
