Barry was my science teacher at Wellington Girls'College. He was a wondetful teacher, kind, patient and empathetic.
He also started a chess club and of course was very active in promoting athletic sports.
I agree with all that others have said about him here. He was a very fine man.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to tell him what
a wonderful teacher he was and how glad I was to have known him.

I´m so sorry to hear that Barry has passed away. My condolences to Rachel, Marian, Scott and Iona. Barry you were the coach that `found´ me and started me on my journey in athletics. My parents loved having you to visit in Masterton. I have lots of memories of my early days in Wellington- on the back of your scooter going to training, learning to lift weights in the YMCA gym, your fluorescent socks when we ran on the Botanical Gardens after dark and many more!
While moving on to other coaches I remained friends with you and your family and kept in touch. You were always interested and supportive of my athletic achievements.
Rest in peace.

Wonderful memories of Barry in early years at SIT. A very unique character who shared many a good story or advice when ever we met over the years. Whatever he was involved in he gave of his best. Please accept our sympathy. Hugh and Robyn Miller

What a lovely even tempered empathetic man he was. I enjoy happy memories of his company as a colleague at SIT and visits to the family home just past Riverton, (despite the steepness of the hill walk.)

Thankyou Barry for all the time, support and encouragement you gave to me in Wellington for my time in athletics. I so loved our catch up a few years ago in Dunedin remembering those times. You gave of your time and enthusiasm and deep knowledge of so many facets within the athletic sport, all voluntarily not expecting anything in return. I will always be grateful and remember you. Best wishes and comfort to your family. Judy Moresby needs Wilkins

Dear Iona and Family,
Although we didn't know your father, please except our condolences; as loosing a parent and or loved one is never easy.

Rachel, Marian, Scott and Iona. Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father.

I remember him as a passionate athlete, coach and training companion during the 1960´s at the Kiwi Athletics Club and later at the Wellington Harrier Club when you were living just below the Clubroom.

His enthusiasm and drive to better himself and the athletes he coached is a lasting memory.

As a decathlete he tackled one of the toughest events on the athletics calendar and gave 100 percent. I´m sure that in life he will have applied the same discipline and effort.

I don´t have any photos of Barry competing apart from a very grainy video. However the attached photo of Barry with another of the Kiwi Club´s great coaches, Dave Corrigan, is a refreshing reminder of him.

I´m very sorry for your loss and send my sympathy to you and your extended family.

Barry and I have been cousins for ever it seems. Although we haven't kept in touch much apart from occasional emails. He was the first one to research our family tree. He is also well known among the athletic community. He was also the first male teacher at Wellington Girls College. Rest in peace, Barry.
