Barry GADSBY Obituary
Late of Cornwall Gardens, Christchurch. On May 8, 2025, at Metlife Merivale Village, on the eve of his 85th birthday. A loved son, brother, uncle, and friend. A member of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, Barry was also a dedicated friend to the Sisters of the Carmelite Monastery, and a long-time appreciator of the arts, theatre, and horticultural communities in New Zealand. Messages for the "Gadsby Family" may be sent c/- PO Box 26051, North Avon, Christchurch 8148. A Vigil Service will be held in the Carmelite Monastery Chapel, 52 Halswell Road*, Christchurch, on Tuesday, May 13, at 7.00pm. Requiem Mass for Barry will be celebrated at the Carmelite Chapel on Wednesday, May 14, at 10.00am, to be followed by a private burial in Opunake. *Please allow extra travel time for road works along Halswell Road.

It has come to my attention, after a year, that Barry has passed away. I had been wondering about his absence. I had the privilege of serving as his window cleaner for several years, and he consistently extended the kindness of sharing lunch and engaging in delightful conversation. He was one of only two clients who offered such a gesture, and his home was truly enchanting. I regret not having been aware of his passing, as I would have attended his funeral. Barry was a truly wonderful individual, akin to family.

A special member of The Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, Knight Grand Cross, an award not many achieve. A special friend to Sheila Winn OBE and 'Order of St Lazarus' who he accompanied on many a philanthropist journey into literature, the arts and theatre both throughout NZ and overseas.
A special friend also to Vivienne Kane and family over many decades.
A truly kind gentleman.

I had many happy occasions with Barry organising fundraising. The one I remember best was when we fundraised for a new floor at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Barbados Street. What fun we had and it was very successful. God rest your soul Barry and may the Angels lead you into paradise
