I will always remember Athol's and Anna's smiles and kindness during their times in Pavia, Italy, when Athol was teaching for the ROSE School. Athol's scientific legacy is still present in nowadays classes and students.
Also on behalf of the Earthquake Engineering group in Pavia, we are very saddened by this news and send all our support to Athol's family.

Louise and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Professor Athol Carr of the University of Canterbury. I first met Athol in 1995 during my sabbatical at Canterbury, and over the decades, our professional relationship blossomed into a lasting friendship rooted in mutual respect, admiration, and shared curiosity.
I was privileged to be among the early testers of his groundbreaking RUAUMOKO computer program that has since become an important tool in the global practice of earthquake engineering. Athol´s contributions to the field were visionary, but it was his quiet generosity, deep intellect, and humble demeanor that truly set him apart. His legacy lives on not only in his software and publications, but in the thousands of students, engineers and researchers he has inspired and guided around the world.
We fondly recall Athol and his beloved wife Anna visiting us in Montreal-moments full of warmth and laughter. I am especially grateful for the trust he placed in me when I supervised his son James during his master´s studies at the University at Buffalo. Sharing a meal in Athol´s home in Christchurch, meeting his family, and learning about his surprising knack for restoring old agricultural tractors gave us a glimpse into the man behind the engineer-a man of many talents and deep heart.
The earthquake engineering community has lost a giant, and we have lost a cherished friend. Our thoughts are with the Carr family during this difficult time.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Andre Filiatrault, Ph.D.
