A long Life, a full life, a life well lived
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Smith, a devoted husband of the late Wynne Smith (2009), a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Dad was born in Birmingham, England, and was a decorated veteran of WWII who saw active combat in France (Normandy) where he took a bullet for our freedom. Remembrance Day always held great significance to him; he would proudly don his medals and attend the commemoration service. He was a citizen of the world, well-traveled. He lived in East Africa and Australia before finally immigrating to Canada in 1956. He never lost his love of travel. Dad settled in Calgary where he worked for Chevron Canada for over 30 years, retiring after a long and successful career. Dad had a passion for learning. He was an avid reader and a student of history who loved good conversation, good food and long walks with the family dogs. He was a raconteur extraordinaire who jokingly taught us that the facts should never interfere with a good story. That said, he was a man of honesty and integrity who was a stickler for the truth. Dad was always a gentleman and was to the very end. He was actively involved in the community all his life and believed in making a positive contribution to society. This attitude continued when he moved into Staywell Manor 5 1/2 years ago. A supporter of the Manor's programs especially Link-Ages, Dad received great enjoyment from the companionship of the "boys" at the Manor with whom he shared many stories and a glass of wine. Leaving behind to mourn his loss are his three children, Barbara Stephen (Harold), Anne Lerner (Steven), John Smith (Fay), along with five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, and seven step-great- grandchildren. The family wishes to express our deepest appreciate to Dr. Deanna Campbell, all the staff of Staywell Manor for their quality of care and their compassion especially in the last few months of his life. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James Catholic Church (5504 – 20 St SW) on Friday, February 26, 2016.
