Arthur Follett Obituary

FOLLETT, Dr. Arthur Vincent Dr. Arthur Vincent Follett passed away at the Peter Lougheed Center in Calgary on May 26, 2005 at the age of 81. Art was born in Calgary on June 30, 1923, and was the third of four children of Mary Elizabeth and Dr. Joseph Vincent Follett. He graduated from Calgary Central High School in 1941, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta in 1944, and received his MD from the University of Alberta in 1948. He interned at the University Hospital in Edmonton and the Western Hospital in Toronto from 1948-1949, and worked for the Department of Public Health in Regina until June of 1950. He then returned home to join his father in the general practice of medicine, and was a prominent and highly-respected member of the Calgary medical community for 25 years. In July 1975 he moved to Edmonton to become the Medical Director for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Commission, and in 1979, was appointed Senior Medical Consultant to the Department of Hospitals and Medical Care for the Government of Alberta, a position that he held until his retirement in 1987. Art met Marg, his wife of 56 years, in Edmonton in 1948. They were married in 1949, and together they raised four children - daughter Dawn (Pierre) Barraqu, and sons Doug (Karen), Dave (Barb) and Joe (Shelley). Art will live on in the memories of his eleven grandchildren - Erin, Josh, Marie, Vincent, David, Benoit, Ben, James, Emily, Will, and Chris; and in the collective memories of the many wonderful friends that he and Marg remained so close to throughout their years together. Art was a member of the Rotary Club for 47 years, and a member of both the Calgary Golf and Country Club and the Glencoe Club. He was an avid golfer, skier, and fisherman. He was very active in the congregation of Wesley United Church, and in later years was a member of the congregation of Grace Presbyterian Church. Art was predeceased by his sister Dora (Dent), his brother Bert, and his sister Emily (Black). The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Dwight Nelson, Dr. J.C. Lategan and his staff, and the staff of Unit 51 at the Peter Lougheed Center; their tireless efforts to support his well-being were very much appreciated. A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1009 - 15 Avenue SW Calgary on Monday, May 30, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., Reverend Victor Kim officiating. Contributions in Art's memory can be made to either The Salvation Army, 822, 420 - 9 Avenue SE Calgary, AB T2G 0R9 or to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry, 102 - 11 Avenue SE Calgary, AB T2G 0X5. May 30, 2005

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family on the loss of a wonderful man. I fondly remember Dr. Follett around Wesley and during our activities in the Hi-C. To Dawn & Doug, whom I knew better as we were in Hi-C during the same time, I know that things seem difficult now but eventually you will remember all the happy times you all shared and the hurt will lessen and disapate. Hope you will all cherish the loving family memories you share. Sinderely Brenda Elford (nee Brown - Archie & Dot's daughter)
