I knew Tony in his capacity as Editor of the The New Zealand Oxford Dictionary. A true gentleman and a fine lexicographer. I am privileged to have known him.

I had a very high opinion of Tony, which developed over many years, since I met him on my first day at the University of Canterbury in 1969. He was always good-natured, and efficient in handling the administrative burdens that were put on him. These did not interfere with his distinguished work as a scholar and lexicographer.

Tony was my Old English lecturer at Canterbury in the 90s. I remember him with great fondness and respect. He was kind and gentle, and very passionate about language and literature. I'm so sorry Tony - I hope that you're drinking mead with kings and their warriors.
