May the Lord bless you, Sheena and your family with comfort at this time of great loss.
Alex was such a wise, kind, generous, helpful, compassionate and understanding man. One of the many valuable thoughts that he shared with me was the idea that we should not let the negative experiences from the past steal our present and future. I am so grateful to have known Alex and benefited from his great wisdom and experience. With love, Jannette.

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not, knoweth not God; for God is love." (1 John 4:7-8)
"For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." (Luke 14:11)
I knew Alex through Amnesty International - the movement of people moved to act for people they don't know out of compassion and commitment to the idea that every human being is worthy of being treated with dignity and justice.
In my experience Alex exemplified all these things: no flashy attitude or trappings; just dogged persistence in the face of violations of the human spirit and rights of the individual.
I vividly remember his tears during a leadership course when, overwhelmed by the commitment and skill of young Amnesty members he met during the course, he suggested he could not possibly match their leadership qualities. The young people present were shocked, and told him they were humbled and inspired by, and learned from, his example.
It was an honour to have known and worked with him.

Much loved Grandad

Alex was an amazing, compassionate person. I would meet him at Amnesty gatherings and he always made me want to be a better person. My sympathy to the family and friends of this special man.

My life only briefly touched that of Alex in his work with Amnesty but as with many others that was enough to realize he was an exceptional man. His ability to listen to others with compassion and insight was remarkable. He gave you the feeling that we all can make a difference in our own way. A huge loss to the community. We are all better for knowing him.

I have known Alex for nearly a decade and in that time I have found him to be one of the most compassionate and generous people I have known. Alex's contribution to Amnesty International has been immense and I am not alone when I say I am very sad to see him go.

Personally & on behalf of the Amnesty International Canterbury Regional Planning team and Amnesty International Aotearoa NZ: a huge loss to us all. Alex was one of the most generous, committed and caring people I've known. He contributed so much to our lives, our local & national groups and the wider community. Not to mention the thousands of prisoners of conscience worldwide whom he helped to protect and/or free. Will be very sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Sheena and her family at this sad time.
