Very sorry to lose a real NZ chess icon. He liked sharp play, and just loved chess itself. A real character.

Arie was always in for a chat and a worthy opponent, he beat me most of the time. I will never forget his "draw ?" after he reached out his hand when he was about to loose. He will be missed at the club

Arie was a dangerous opponent who could beat anyone on his day. Besides being something of an institution and a legend on the local chess scene, he was a really good bloke and great fun to be with. I will miss him more than I can say.

I remember Arie as a young chess player and most of all his wonderful laugh. Combine that laugh with someone like David Weegenaar and you had a room electrified with laughter. A chess icon whose memories will live on. RIP Arie :-)

One of the great characters of NZ chess. I'll really miss Arie's cheerful face and cheeky banter - especially at those seniors' events. Goodbye old warrior. RIP

An infectious laugh and as cheeky and intelligent as they get. He was a mentor, combatant and above all a friend. I will miss his personality and challenge immensely.

Arie was very friendly and one of the real characters of NZ chess when I knew him. And I played him more than once competitively and many times in "friendly" fast games. He generally won. I recall one game where I played him at his home at Pines Beach. He was very hospitable and won that won too. I will always have fond memories of you, Arie. RIP.

A wonderful man. Warm, witty and a delight to be around. As a chess opponent he was ferocious but also very generous with his knowledge. He will be sadly missed.
