John KRITER Obituary

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of John Kriter on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Casey House in Toronto, after a short and valiant battle with an aggressive cancer. He added so much colour, style and flair to the world in his daily life, now he'll colour up the sky. Born and raised in Hamilton on April 7, 1954, John spent most of his adult life living in Toronto, where he worked at his second home, the COC (Canadian Opera Company). He was a gifted Tenor and sang in many operas over his 30-year career. As well, he worked in the COC offices as the Advancement Operations Officer. His clever wit and beautiful style will be dearly missed by his siblings, Karen (Herb) Exley, Mary Lou Pemberton, and Jim (Chris) Kriter. He was Uncle Johnny to Tim (deceased) (Michelle), Dave (Tonia), Leslie (John), Michael Ryan (Alissa), Jessica, Sean, and Bradley (Tiffany). He will also be missed by his great-nieces and nephews. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Princess Margaret. A special thank you to everyone at Casey House, for making his final days peaceful and dignified. Many thanks to his COC family, especially to "Johnny's Angels," for all their help and support. In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place. Thank you to M.A. Clark & Sons Funeral Home, in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to Casey House, Toronto or Rainbow Railroad Toronto. May he rest in peace, surrounded by beautiful music and all the things that bring him joy.

John was incredibly supportive and kind to me as a young artist learning the ropes at the Canadian Opera Company. Great singer, colleague and a genuine creature of the stage which we shared many times together. Will greatly miss his passion for opera and fashion, and especially our chats or card games between cues.

John was the sweetest, kindest, loveliest colleague of mine at the COC. That he was a snappy dresser is obvious, what is not a given was that he was so comfortable in the most stylish outfits. He was so naturally himself no matter what he did. He was a singular, special person and all of our lives are richer to have known him.

John and I were in kindergarten together at Onteora School. We were in cub scouts together at Holy Trinity Church.
We went to Hill Park together, and were cast in Brigadoon. I knew then that John had a great voice.
I went into full time music before John, and I remember a phonecall with his dad asking me if I thought it was a good idea for him to make that leap. Of course, I said yes.
Rest in peace, my friend.
