Roy WILLIAMS Obituary

WILLIAMS, Roy (James
Edmund Roy) -
Willie, Willie the Pom, late N.A.C and Air NZ. Fisherman extraordinaire.
On Sunday, September 14, 2014, peacefully at Rannerdale, with Anne at his side. Loved husband of the late Peggy, and much loved father of Anne and long-time friend of Chris Bond, Anne's partner.
Roy had a long,
interesting and adventurous
life. He was born at Birkenhead, England, October 27, 1921, attended primary school in Sydney, Australia, watching the Harbour Bridge being built. Returning to England he won a scholarship to continue his education. Roy's first job was with a tailor - he loved being well dressed. He joined the RAF in 1939, (RAF 653576, Regular Service and WWII) Flight Mechanic. Later served in Southern Rhodesia. Transferred to RNZAF (73146), arriving NZ 1950. Served in NZ and Lauthala Bay, Fiji. Roy was very proud to serve in 2 flying boat squadrons (Catalinas) for England and NZ. In 1951 troops were deployed in the Waterfront Strike, Roy was sent to Dunedin where he met Peggy, at the Town Hall dance. They were married on September 22, 1951. Roy had a great voice, singing in the movie "His Majesty O'Keefe" (1954), starring Burt Lancaster. Roy joined NAC/Air NZ in 1954; he loved his job, including crewing on the delivery flight of a Fokker Friendship from Holland to NZ. He retired in 1981, spending his time fishing, gardening and travelling, his great passions. A life well lived.
A big thank you to Gail Mangels, for her love and care for Roy over several years, enabling him to stay in his own home. To the staff of Rannderdale Veterans Care, for their tender and respectful care for Roy over the past 6 months, and to Dr Rob Van Rij.
At Roy's request, a private cremation has been held, his ashes will be scattered at his favourite fishing spot. Messages to Anne Williams, C/- PO Box
11101, Christchurch 8443.
