To add to my husband Dieter's words, I'll always remember how hospitable Penny & Dick were to us - lunches in Palmerston North, overnight stays in both their flat in Thorndon and their lovely house on the hill in Wellington, not to forget Dick's absorbing love of opera and how impressed I was they both led opera tour groups to Europe - and how Dick himself had a wonderfully Wagnerian look and air, but I think he was most probably a much nicer, kinder person, and one who always so took so great good care of Penny.

I fondly remember meeting Dick in the early 1990s at Massey and at a New Zealand literature conference in Austria. While teaching at Massey in 1994 I experienced him as a kind, friendly, diplomatic, efficient and humorous Head of the English Department who was highly thought of by all his colleagues. My wife Jan and I enjoyed his and Penny's hospitality in Wellington when we met last. Our best wishes to Penny and her children at this sad time of their lives.

I remember Dick with affection. He was a generous and warmhearted colleague, always looking for the best in others and genuinely puzzled when occasionally others did not show him their best. Rest in peace, Dick. My loving sympathy to Penny, Patrick, Antonia and their families.

I remember Dick as a kind, charming and fair-minded colleague. He and Penny entertained my children sometimes when I was a solo parent, for which we were very grateful. I send my condolence to Penny.
