Thank you for all of the wonderful memories we shared together whilst in the hills, in the ute, at the office, or relaxing on the steps having a chat at the end of a day. A great experience and a part of my life where you taught me so much about the environment and how to implement change.
You have left an indelible impression (and a few policies) that helped NZ before they realized they needed it.
My condolences go out to your family

I worked with John for a number of years while bulldozing and pest monitoring at Waiouru. John looked out for his team, was a man I had a lot of time for, and much respect. My condolences to John's family.

Hey Johnny Mangos, so sad to hear of your passing. May you rest in peace my friend. Really enjoyed working with you in Waiouru, when land management, housing and barracks were under the one roof.
My heartfelt condolences to your children. I remember Jake well from the days he used to come to work with you. God Bless.

I had the privilege of working alongside John in Waiouru in the 90s. He was a great man that was very passionate about his work in the training area. He did a great job bringing up his awesome children. RIP John..you may be gone but you won't be forgotten buddy.

From the New Zealand Defence Force -
John worked for NZDF at the Waiouru Training Area for many years as Land Manager. John was instrumental in establishing the current methods we use to prevent spread of wilding pine throughout the training area. His work was pioneering; he established new ideas, new methods and battled for many years to secure the resources he needed for his work. His work at Waiouru laid a scientific and pragmatic foundation on which much current management work throughout New Zealand still relies.
John was a champion, passionate about his work and what he called "his tussock" - may he rest in peace.
