I have just learned of John's passing. A loyal friend lost.We first met in Westport in the 1960's when john was a struggling young lawyer and I a struggling young chartered accountant. Along with our mutual friend and then Granity GP, Dr. Dick Cox, we formed a life-long friendship cemented on the Westport Golf Course where we were fondly referred to as "The Three Musketeers".
My last conversation with John was in January when we once again traversed memory lane. So glad we did.
Christchurch Marist always did welcome the Old Boys challenges John - but you knew that!
Rest in peace my much valued friend.

I was especially sad to hear of John's passing. Before his retirement we used to play tennis. John was slower than in his prime but played well. He had had coaching in Hawaii and wanted to know if his serve to my backhand was kicking - (which it wasn't but I didn't have the heart to tell him, so I agreed that his serve was kicking like a fired up stallion).
I appeared before him in a couple of cases, and was impressed at the calmness and authority he showed from the bench. In public John was approachable and friendly.
Rest in peace John, Robin Espie

Very sad to learn of John's passing. A delightful colleague and a lawyer who loved challenging accepted (and often narrow) boundaries of legal thought, he never lost his perceptive sense of humour. Our very sincere condolences to Diana who loved and cared for him wonderfully well. John was proud of his family and to them too our sympathies.

"Cadie's" death is a great loss to us all. He was the personification of kindness and consideration. Not a bitter bone in his body. He taught me much about humility. A very clever lawyer, he gained a PhD while a sitting judge. He loved Diana very dearly. She and the rest of his family have my sincere sympathy. Rod Joyce QSO QC

My deepest sympathies to the Family. John was a brilliant man and a real gentleman often reminding me that the word Court was derived from the word courtesy.
