Dear Judi, Terry and family
About 65 years ago two newly married couples moved into next door flats in Elizabeth Street in Timaru. Neither knew many people in town and they became fast friends. Shortly after both Brian and Monica McSweeney and Margaret and Bruce Helm were pregnant and first Kevin, and shortly after, Judith, were produced. As new parents in the mid 1950s they supported and looked after each other. They also played cards ( boy .. did they ever play cards ... some of my earliest memories ... a smokey room, a fast game is a good game, and both Brian and Margaret always knowing they were right!!.
While our families went different ways over the years my mum and dad and Aunty Margaret (and for many years Uncle Bruce) kept in touch and stayed friends.
After mum died and Dad moved back to Canterbury 30 years ago he and Margaret stayed in touch and while they didn't catch up frequently they were firm friends.
When Dad died Aunty Margaret sent me a lovely message which I will always value.

To Margaret's family,
I met Margaret at ChCh Senior Citizens card group about 5 years ago. She was very proud of her family & loved her Whist card game although according to Margaret, most of us didn't play it correctly. . Just a pity you didn't get to enjoy your new found mobility. Rest in peace Margaret

To Terry, Judith & all the family. Our sympathy to you all on your loss of Margaret. We met Margaret when she became our neighbor in Woodham Courts, & enjoyed her company. She spoke often of her family, & we know that she appreciated all you did for her. Rest in Peace, Margaret.
